Establishing A New Health Standard

Eating healthy leads to results—it’s that simple. However, not everybody knows how to diet effectively

You can eat a salad for lunch and feel like you’re doing the right thing, but then you throw in processed chicken, turkey, or tuna and top it off with 700 calories of dressing, and that skews results. Sure, the salad was a good idea, and you may feel better because you think you’re eating well, but it won’t help you reach your desired health or weight any faster.

Why do you think it’s healthy? Because, for years the food industry has been misleading consumers by putting labels on products, that cause them to believe they’re healthy, like vegan, which by itself does not mean it’s good for you.

The paradigm needs shifting. The problem is that many people want to make healthy decisions, but they aren’t equipped with the knowledge to do so. As consumers, we can try to educate ourselves, but there also needs to be someone to help us make decisions. What do you base your purchases on?


A Consumer’s Responsibility

Right now, the onus falls on consumers. You need to be aware of what you’re bringing into your home and putting into your body. Unknowing consumers want genuine help because there’s so much conflicting advice swirling around in magazines, on television, and on the internet. We need someone honest and unbiased, who can’t be bought.

Reading one article isn’t enough. It’s important to commit to listening to someone you trust. In an ideal world, we’d have a single trustworthy source for everything health-related.

A consumer’s responsibility also extends to supporting environmentally minded brands, even beyond food products. What steps are your favorite companies making with regard to sustainability? Do they use compostable packaging? When you buy their products, can you see the big picture?

I have a baby grandson who spends a lot of time at my home. For the first time ever, I’ve considered the types of cleaning products my wife and I keep around the house. It’s important to be mindful of harmful chemicals that go into products like floor cleaner; they are not only dangerous for a nine-week-old, but also for an adult.

If I need to spend more money on organic products to avoid putting my family’s health at risk, then so be it. There’s a reason you always see lawyers’ ads on TV, wanting to help you win money in lawsuits against companies that use harmful chemicals. The risk isn’t worth the potential reward—especially when it comes to my grandson.

While it’s crucial to know what you surround yourself with, it’s even more important to know what you’re putting into your body.

If you are under the impression that you’re drinking healthy fruit juice, you may be drinking nothing more than refined pesticides. Just because you’re buying ‘non-GMO’ fruit from the grocery store and putting it through your juicer at home doesn’t mean it’s great for you. Some companies add sugar to their juice, many have no scientific evidence to support their nutritional claims. These extra ingredients include maple syrup and rice syrup—meant to fill you up, give you energy, and help get you through a cleanse. I am not against such a concept as long as it is disclosed as such.

But what happens afterward? If the results you expected don’t show and you notice your energy levels are not consistent? What these companies do is slap an eye-catching claim on their packaging—but ultimately mislead you. Sure, an ingredient in the product has been scientifically proven to work. That’s what they’re selling you on. The product itself, though? It hasn’t been tested for effectiveness. By diving deeper and building a foundational understanding of what is good for you, you’ll be able to recognize when labels are misleading.

To combat this, you need to do your research. Make sure you know the ingredients and what they do. Be mindful of what you’re buying, and make sure it’s beneficial to your long-term wellness.


Making Healthy ‘Deposits’

Many of us pay a great deal of attention to the bad things we put into our bodies. But everything healthy that you eat is just as significant. The bad foods add up: tons of hamburgers can lead to high cholesterol, and a lot of candy can lead to diabetes. Why wouldn’t vitamins and nutrients add up, too? Your body is capable of processing all of the junk, so it’s more than capable of processing the nutrients that help to produce energy.

Think of it like this: When you put food into your body, you’re making a deposit. Everything you eat counts, not everything you don’t eat.

I make positive deposits in the morning, so I feel light physically and sharp mentally throughout the day, setting me up for success. Drinking green juice first thing in the morning has several benefits:

• It improves your digestive system.

• It creates balance in your diet.

• It affords you room for comfort foods later because you packed in quality nutrients. (This is especially beneficial for holidays, weddings, and the like!)

When you make items like wheatgrass a staple of your diet, you will see and feel benefits over time. Sustainable dieting and behavior lead to sustainable health. By creating and maintaining these habits, you’re making an investment in your future.


Take It From an ‘Angel’

My dream is to become a go-to source for healthy eating and purchasing— a total wellness resource that doesn’t just caution you to avoid things that are unhealthy. I want to teach people what is healthy—a more positive way of encouraging behaviors that are good for you long-term.

I believe the way to approach your health is not to ‘beware’ but to be aware. I will never tell you that you’re making a mistake if you’re buying questionable foods.

I will simply offer my best recommendations, wish you the best of luck, and encourage you to keep a journal. By documenting how you feel, you’ll be able to track progress—or lack thereof—and adjust your diet and habits accordingly.

There’s no room for corruption or insincerity when you call yourself an ‘Angel of Health.’ I believe I answer to a higher authority, and with the ability and enthusiasm to help others, I can truly make a difference.
